part of it is how unique it is compared to all other seasons. Season 1 was cold and rainy but tons of people have experience camping in areas like that, so they'd be prepared for it. Not many people have experience in the Arctic but by the time the show went there, contestants had several seasons to learn from and the Arctic was really just a more extreme version of those seasons.
Whereas now, not many people have experience camping in the South African desert and none of the previous seasons prepare them for it. I'm actually surprised the lack of wood hasn't been a bigger issue, I wonder if as time goes on it will be a problem or maybe I'm just overestimating how much wood they burn. I expected somebody to try a passive water filter like pic-related to conserve wood.
