Well, everything in the universe is recursive and nested, so logic would tell we live in a simulation, of a simulation, of a simulation....etc. Judging by observable axioms it's probably a spiraling loop, a fractal. What most people don't account for though, is that this would affect the structure of the mind as well, not just "external reality".
It could pretty well be a situation in which we are neurons in a host's brain and our waking experience is some sort of illusion byproduct of all the information we're constantly filtering for our host. Our "collective consciousness" then would form the host's mind and our "real bodies" would lodged somewhere in the host's brain. And going back to the recursive and nested nature of reality, logic would tell this host is also a neuron in an even bigger host.
This all goes back to the famous "as above so below" axiom, one of the simplest and better observable axioms.
