It's not impressive when you know how old it is and how shit most of these boats were when they were designed and how badly they degraded over a short period of time. But the russians mostly hold their attack submarines back and maintain a defensive perimeter around their SSBNs. A small number of nuclear attack submarines play a role in denying access to their bastions by extending out into the SLOCs. This theoretically serves the purpose of breaking enemy formations before they enter a bastion's outer layer. The kilo class submarines were intended for littoral waters like the black sea and the white sea but not sure what they're using them for now. Most of the russian subs are inherited from an empire that had very different intentions for them and had a much larger pool of manpower. But the only nuclear attack submarines they have that are up to modern standards are the yasen class subs, which could do a lot of damage if they're sent out rather than being held back to protect the boomers. Everything else is too loud compared to the competition. They just don't have the resources to mass produce Yasens like the soviets could with the victor 3s. They're also having trouble decommissioning old vessels.
