Maybe Malediciton only keeps the people it afflicts dead as long as it's activated? Meaning if he were to deactivate it the Islanders would come back to life. Or that island was just a probing/expeditionary force and by keeping Malediction activated it sends a message to the other island(s) to not try anything.
