I've always had a tough time stomaching the gameplay in HoMM games. Everything feels more like a puzzle game where you have to rush the enemy before they can snowball out of control. Armies fighting each other is always 1v1, and friendly arrmies can't even assist each other without relinquishing units to the strongest leader. Then you have this weird meta which involves daisy-chaining hired heroes so your main hero can get supplied with troops from faraway. That, or you risk having to spend turns sitting in your base clicking End Turn until you have enough troops to get over the next speed bump. I swear HoMM games are like the Super Smash Bros Melee of fantasy strategy games, the way these absurdities exist in order to promote competitive play, and if you didn't play a certain meta-approved way, you would get utterly stomped.
