Nukes are real but the only ones that work are the atomic ones, thermonukes stopped working because very few reactors have the qualifications to extract tritium anymore leading to a shortage of production for a substance with a half life of 12 years. Additionally, fusion testing centers consume so much of the shit and because most nuclear programs have had such large cuts in funding they can only afford to maintain a few nukes let alone buy tritium (~$10,000 per gram).
