I needed some random placeholder arcade machines for a game scene, found some on renderhub, and thought "well, it's 7 bucks, so I could just use these as-is now. Then in the future, use these as a base for making the final assets, since it'll be as simple as painting over the textures with something that better fits my game's style". But it turns out whoever made this included a bunch of random raw 3ds Max formats and .obj. Except the .obj have no .mtl. I tried reaching out to the guy who made them to see if he just forgot to include the .mtl, but he turned out to be a third-worlder I can barely communicate with.
So I went "screw it" and decided to just download 3ds Max, since I assumed the included .max files would open correctly and I'd just have to export them into some Unreal-friendly format I know how to work with like FBX. But I have no idea what I'm doing in this program and the model always displays as black (I suspect it has something to do with the "scene converter" menu that pops up, but haven't found a solution). And I'm not 100% which of these .max files I'm even supposed to be opening.
I included a random one here as an example. If someone could take a look at these files and explain in plain text what to do to get them to open correctly (so I can export it into an Unreal-friendly format that doesn't break the texture mapping), I'd appreciate it.
