I think the Ultramarines get a bad rap. Mostly thanks to a certain codex writer sucking their dick so hard that he retro-actively made all other chapters their bitch, but on their own they have some compelling writing. The staunch traditionalists who had to admit after horrific losses that their founders big book of war didn't have all the answers to every problem. Now they have to specialize against a specific enemy in order to continue operating at all that they've become non-standard by the Codex Astartes, that an Imperial Fists successor chapter ended up being more compliant than they were.

At least if we're talking 4th ed Ultramarines...
