Because you have to be conditioned or condition yourself to read. Most books nowadays are not aimed at men:

Most books read in school are either dumbed down, written by gays for gays (and women) or you can only have one interpretation of it.
Reading literature is not natural, you need to be prepared mentally for it, especially if you're reading older books which aren't a min-maxed dopamine cycle fest.
Nobody is catering to tastes of men to read new books (plus you'd need to compete with vidya, anime, movies); and nobody is preparing men intellectually to be scholars.
