There's an entire meta reason why, because it makes WoW "the new guard's game". They're doing it because they want to disassociate themselves from the creative works of most of the original staff, who were evil drunken molesters.

I think the ingame one is probably best answered by like a creative writing major. I assume that it has to do with stakes, and having a reason to fight, or a drive to seek an answer. Loss is one of the easiest motivators, we "know" Lor'themar a lot more than we know any bad guy.
