A lot of it just seems made up on the spot. Like it's not an already established protocol but people making up their own interpretations to get others in trouble.
I remember an anime about Nobunaga had his wife wearing a kimino that was a gifted to her. They went into a meeting and nearly got killed because the pattern on the kimono was that of a peacock looking away. And that interpreted as their host being so disgusting that the peacock didn't want to look at him.
