Learning about how the world really works does make you an alcoholic and or substance abuser. I wish I sticked to my bingbingwahoo games and didn't fall into the literature and philosophy rabbit hole.

It's the most miserable book I've ever read, but Celine knows how to write, he has style. Houellebecq is the complete opposite. No style, it's just about the shock value of what he says and making the readers smirk from time to time with a crass penis joke.

One is a writer that write primarily for style. A style that mimics to perfection the way people used think and talk. It's not a pleasant read because he is so effective at transmitting the misery and stupidity of men to the reader.

The other uses writing as a way to vent his frustrations about the world and women, especially women. He's not good at writing, but his ideas resonate with a lot of people in Europe today. He drinks, he smokes. He is cool. He's the perfect cliche of the nihilistic decadent yet conservative French intellectual that people love. He plays the Baudelaires but without any of the talent for writing that famous authors possess.
