Remember that the creator of the Simpsons Matt Groening got so pissy at the idea of a Simpsons/Critic crossover that he tried to get it pulled from the air and when he couldn't he took his name out of the credits. Then by the time the Simpsons/Family Guy crossover happened he didn't give a single shit.

Part of what made the Critic crossover work so well is if you didn't know about the Critic you could watch the crossover and have no idea it was a crossover. You could easily think it was just another regular Simpsons episode.
