Bulgaria itself fell under a communist system of government so it is safe to assume the propaganda went both ways. Your fren is right in that Tito did officially recognize us as a republic but it was to add a buffer between Communist Yugoslavia and Democratic Greece and to troll the West. There was a time when what is now North Macedonia fell within the territory of the Second Bulgarian Empire but there was also a time when the Bulgarians fell within the Ottoman Empire. Did this automatically make them Turks? Realistically no. Our problems with Bulgaria stem from them being absolute dicks when they occupied Macedonia. It started out fine and they were treated as liberators but that turned bad driving us to team up with Tito’s resistance movement. We fell within Yugoslavia after WW2 and then the non aligned pact after that. Bulgaria fell under the Warsaw pact and USSR influence. We are very linguistically alike but it is the same with Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro. Does this make them Bulgarian as well? Your Bulgarian sounds like one of those types that go back through history, finds the map they like and holds it to be the only proper truth. Well the Macedonian empire stretched all the way to Afghanistan which in today’s world is totally irrelevant. I would also say that if Bulgaria wanted us so bad they should have made better choices.
