You guys ever played Princess Maker 2? It's not that different in the sense that you "train" your kid and depending on which work you give them they can go into different professions. You need to give them days off as well. I played that one on DOS way back when but it still holds up. Digimon World for PS1 is obviously a popular one.
Chao Gardens in Sonic Adventure I think are also popular due to a similar type of gameplay. The animals you collect from playing the game can level up your chao, then you put them in races/contests and their appearance will change as they "evolve" depending on what you feed them.
