when i started out i'd watch an episode twice, once with jp subs and one with english subs to clear up misunderstandings.
it's a slog at first, but you will notice that you're mining less and less words over time because you understand it.
i have my browser set up to let me inject subtitles into any video player and use a hover dictionary to mine words directly into anki.
