>we can venture into slightly deeper stories? Like maybe Mario RPG tier?
Don't think you realize the range of this. You probably should have said Bowser's fury tier.
The average mainline Mario story has next to no story outside of the opening and ending. As an anon said even the Galaxy storybook(s) were optional. Mario sunshine had the most in your face story elements throughout the game (with even voice acting), followed by some of Bowser's fury and a bit of Odyssey.
Mario Character subseries and other spinoffs have bigger amounts of story consistency surrounding the gameplay time but not massive.
Mario RPGs have the biggest dialogues and story elements throughout every part of the game along these 3 types of Mario.
Mainline should be gameplay first and foremost and shouldn't have RPG level story amounts but I think character subseries or fury tier amount of story and dialogue would be a fine change.
