for me, I'd say the characters write themselves. That is, I put them in a scenario and they react to it.
I'm not completely helpless to their whims, I'll dictate some of their actions but in return I also get reactions that might make me change/rewrite the scenario

It's so hard though, and it pisses me off how many layers there are between the work and the end result compared to drawing (shaders, materials, normals, lighting, camera setup, post-processing, etc.)

nta but I've made several models with beautiful, full quad loops in convenient places but I'm genuinely questioning if it's even worth the effort when I go and study actual models from games.
