I wouldn't go THAT far but it really hurts that you see something like Songs of Silence and realize just how much damage WoW did to fantasy artstyle. That being said, SoS is really not a benchmark for anything else.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, but D2 absolutely wipes the floor with HoMM III (despite it being my GOTYAY) as far as unit design is concerned. I really can't think of any other TBS which felt so comfortable giving their units colorful and opulent armor and garments without making it look cheesy and WoW-like.
