Undertale kind of just passed me by back in the day. I thought the plot was cool in a lot of ways, but most characters, while charming, had that tendency to be quirky in a way I didn't really like. Plus I was already getting tired of the whole genre deconstruction thing back then. Saw the whole thing on YouTube because I did wanna know the outcome, but never played it.
Deltarune feels like it's not trying as hard to have a gimmick but wants to prove itself in a more "traditional" way, I guess, by having a sincere emotional story with interesting twists. I especially like that for the whole moral thing no one is wagging a finger in your face this time, but if you decide to not be good, the moment just sort of lingers, like "yup, you got what you wanted". It's the kind of game where people aren't gonna scream "omg it's genious" but that's probably for the better because it can be judged without sensationalism.
And also it makes my heart hurt good.
