If you go back to the 1970s, Hamas didn't exist yet and the most militant Palestinian factions (or the leadership anyways) saw themselves as Marxists and part of the global left. If you've seen "Munich" where Israeli commandos storm a Palestinian compound and kill a bunch of guys, those guys were PFLP, who were leftists:

But that collapsed. Yeah, the PFLP still technically exists and I read about one of their guys getting air striked a few days ago in Lebanon, but Hamas and these Islamists rose up. So as to why the left thinks they're great, it's part of a bigger shift to a more moralistic and identity-based politics taken to the extreme. I mean moralism as in dividing the world into the morally pure / impure and out of that comes "West bad" / anti-West good" and "they're brown, so they rock" and "capitalist white man bad." There were elements of that in the older-style left, but that played out more like an ideological contest. The USSR for example usually stressed a distinction between American workers and American capitalists.

Hamas is more like a moral authority to them, and they have that authority because of "who" they are more than what they are proposing, so that's why they don't care why Hamas hates gays and troons. People can compartmentalize or rationalize a lot of things, like "okay they might hate gays and troons but that's because they're oppressed and they wouldn't be like that if it wasn't for Israel." The Islamic stuff can even seen as a mark of authenticity just as you would express your own "identity." Wearing the keffiyeh. That sounds like it doesn't make sense, but it does make sense within this moral narrative.

The Nazi who stops being a Nazi when he realizes Hitler is most popular in the Global South is also a thing.
