I actually really want to know their rationale, since they've objectively lied about it (whether or not they ban), and the rest of it is likely PR speak
unironically WHY would they want less money? WHY do they want the negative PR? WHY increase the likelihood of a financial competitor taking their place? WHY isn't a company taking advantage of the vacuum (either a company already existing since each member of this oligopoly/duopoly can easily substitute each others' services, or a potential future company)?
With the available information to me this doesn't make any sense from a purely capitalistic or power hungry standpoint. And saying they are simply doing it for control is retarded since they are clearly suffering from it at present/why the fuck would some corporate fat cat/shareholder care what (legal) chinese cartoons some customers buy
