New Subaru parts are pretty cheap. Think $2000 for a shortblock.

90% of Subaru failures are from not checking the oil and modding the car without a tune. They have really inconsistent oil consumption, you have to check them once a week like a rotary and change the oil every 3-3500 miles (they're hard on their oil) with a weight higher than stock (0w40/5w40 for EJs, 0w/5w30 for FAs).
Look into a 15-21 WRX, you can find them for $12-18k all day long and if you keep it stock they stay pretty reliable. FA20 is a good motor, makes 220-230whp stock and will be reliable up to 320whp (after that the transmissions or rods go). And if its a second car a STi is a awesome deal for a performance car. The GR 08-14s and pre-facelift VAs are close to the bottom of their depreciation curve, you can find low mileage cars with 60-90k miles for $15-20k (I paid $16k for a 2016 w/73k miles) all day long. $10-15k is the floor for them.
They're not that bad as long as you stay stock turbo (<350whp on a VF48) imo.
