ATS
Looking for a new shit box, ideally something awd. I don't want to deal with an unreliable Subaru boxer or euro pain and the Toyota/Honda tax on their AWD stuff is laughable.

In comes the Cadillac ATS. They seem plentiful, fairly cheap, and supposedly the 3.6 is decent. What's the verdict?

Eats timing chains for breakfast lunch and dinner. I'd go with the 2.0t but someone will say ecotecs are absolute dog shit when in reality, there no worse than any other contemporary 4 banger with a turbo on the market. I'd get whatever last Acura Accord they made with AWD + v6 if that's the pairing your headset on

>unreliable Subaru boxer
It's a meme. They aren't unreliable when not modded if you just change the oil. They're usually reliable. Why would you think some Caddy would be cheaper to maintain?

It's more so about not wanting to deal with with the specific types of issues Subaru's tend to have. That being glass transmissions, head gasket failure, and uncle Rodney coming to visit if you even think about enjoying the occasional redline.

The mass electronic integration BMW's and other euro stuff has seems pretty gross. I don't want to have to do electrical diag because the electronically controlled gas cap door is working intermittently. Also, I really enjoy being able to take a peek at the oil on my dip stick.

I just got out of a 150k mile EJ253 (one of the headgasket ones) with the famous glass 5-spd. I redlined every goddamned day and never had an issue, not even a weep or seep in the engine bay. No sign of coolant seepage, didn't even burn oil.
I did have to replace the front diff b/c the prev owner was a retard but Subarus are actually cheap to maintain and get parts for.
The headgasket issues were gone by the early '00s and had to do with Subaru cheaping out on gaskets, not the boxer design.
They're actually one of the more-reliable brands in general.

you failed to maintain a safe distance from the car ahead of you or adequately apply your brakes, especially considering how minor the damage is to the rear end of your car compared to the front end. its not like you got pushed forward 10+ feet.

The timing chains havent been an issue since 2014. The high feature actually matured into a very good v6. But the LTG ecotec is also the best ecotec engine as well. Both are good options.
The ct4/ct5 represent a significant jump up in the quality if the interiors. But the ats is great all around. Also look at the buick regal T type awd. It also has the LTG but mounted transversely.

There were 23 feet of skid marks left by the car that hit me, which presumably even had ABS (2018 Camry). I was on the brake because it's a downhill and it was a manual. I stay back far enough that I can see the bottom of the car ahead's rear tires over my hood, it's my policy. No one stays back 10+ feet, that's retarded. Get over yourself.

Get an H6 and just service your CVT every 30k miles. Head gaskets aren't an issue on any Subie past 2012. If you get with a 2.5 get a 2016+ as they fixed the piston ring oil leak issue on those.
Anonymous No.28673303 [Report]
>>28672248
2014 Specifically? The exact timing on when the timing chain issue was resolved seems somewhat murky. Some folks claiming 2012+ is fine, some 2013+ is fine, and so on. But yeah, supposedly that 3.6 really became something decent so long as the oil was monitored. Seems like most folks agree that those later 3.6's (excluding AFM models) tend to be more reliable than the turbo eco's.

Are the rumors about copious amounts of ATS luxury electrical gremlins true?

New Subaru parts are pretty cheap. Think $2000 for a shortblock.

>>28672105
90% of Subaru failures are from not checking the oil and modding the car without a tune. They have really inconsistent oil consumption, you have to check them once a week like a rotary and change the oil every 3-3500 miles (they're hard on their oil) with a weight higher than stock (0w40/5w40 for EJs, 0w/5w30 for FAs).

Look into a 15-21 WRX, you can find them for $12-18k all day long and if you keep it stock they stay pretty reliable. FA20 is a good motor, makes 220-230whp stock and will be reliable up to 320whp (after that the transmissions or rods go). And if its a second car a STi is a awesome deal for a performance car. The GR 08-14s and pre-facelift VAs are close to the bottom of their depreciation curve, you can find low mileage cars with 60-90k miles for $15-20k (I paid $16k for a 2016 w/73k miles) all day long. $10-15k is the floor for them.

They're not that bad as long as you stay stock turbo (<350whp on a VF48) imo.

What are your thoughts on golden era 2000 - 2007 EJ205's?

Anonymous No.28673592 [Report]
>>28673544
They hold up better to abuse (No AVCS, larger clearances, no banjo bolts to clog up, longer lasting turbos) but the cars they come in are all pushing 20+ years old and clapped.

300~ whp is the limit for a EJ205, I wouldn't bother going past that before it'll crap a rod bearing or rod. Its not even worth building them imo. Just go for a EJ25 for the same money, it'll be in a newer car with less issues. Or a FA and you have the same power capability but now you build boost 1000rpms sooner (2200-2500rpms vs 3500rpms), get high 20s mpg vs 16-19mpg, and its generally more reliable from being newer and a better design.

If you notice the limits of these cars usually go for <300-320whp if it came in a WRX and <350-370whp if it came in a STi. Exceptions being EJ207 and FA24 (closer to <400~ whp). Its the same design flaws and bullshit in the STis as the WRXs, just the heads/valvetrain is improved and the turbos are slightly bigger. I'd honestly try to stay on the lower end of that number.

In this retarded larp, you would have had to use a slide hammer to remove the hub from the bearing, hammered in the new stud, cut the bearing race off the hub, removed the steering knuckle, put it in a press to remove the old bearing, and then pressed in a bearing and the hub back in, put it all back together, and get your alignment redone all to avoid buying a $8 "gimmicky" tool
