It's all bullshit.
The story of three crackheads inventing an entire genre from a city with no scene was just marketing. Being a pre-internet invention, it kinda stuck, but is no longer considered seriously in musicology. The first problem is that 808 electro loops with big pads and Kraftwerk samples were already a staple with DJ battle records. The other problem is UK Acid House, whjich was a massive scene at6 the time but apparently... didn't exist? It's a weird one. The final problem is Belgium. Sound for sound, most things people consider Techno actually comes from Belgium. And unlike Detroit it already had a club scene in the late 80s playing... really fucking slow Techno. In the US the only place that actually did that, was Chicago.

Marketing is a hell of a thing.
