The desire from "Open World" comes mainly from people playing games they like, but wanting MORE of them.

Then the game devs release 'Game 2: Open World Edition', but it's more content. In fact it is the same amount of real content as before or even less, but you have a big map you can run through that is full of filler. Standard toolkit assets, auto generated assets. Copy pasted assets. Random NPCs written by unpaid interns, etc.

Open world games really are a blight upon our industry. There are only a few games where they are actually good and an improvement and a thousand examples where it's a detriment. I hate open world games.
