I had to look up the details of this again but Nakayama's owner was a woman who died of cancer in Nakayama's third year, after that the ownership passed to her father and the bad tempered Nakayama suddenly became easier to handle and train.
The daughter had a dream of visiting Paris and racing in the Arc, her father took it upon himself and formed Team Violet, named after her favourite flower and he took on the Arc with Nakayama.
Nakayama to this day is still the closest a Japanese horse has come to actually winning, losing by a head in the Arc.
So beyond being the 'gambling horse', she's also a horse that races for other people's dreams.
It's very sweet.
