Nothing is especially special about it aside from the art style being subjectively appealing to some people. It's a pretty well-explored and formulaic genre. It's just solid in every aspect of a metroidvania. Some games do individual elements better, but none of them are as well rounded as HK is. The map system leading to organic moments of "where the fuck am I?" is unique though, as far as I can remember, and it's one of the best features any metroidvania has had.
