Adventuring in skimpy clothing makes a lot of sense for females. It's more protection than full plate. And I don't mean that in an RPG sense but rather a literal one. Lots of creatures are more likely to let a woman live if they can tell at a glance it's a woman(to rape them). Rape armor is both functional and practical.
