Well for one thing it usually makes replaying those same platformers kind of dull and drag till you upgrade to something you want.
Takes a lot longer to actually get to the " fun" of learning how to use and chain your moves if you're a gameplay minded person.
Means that most of the level design and content are designed around a gimped version of your moves for the early and midgame.
Meaning you don't get that much content concerning the way of levels that will actually test your familiarity and strategic use of moves.
Makes the game way less satisfying for anyone looking to apply what they learned.
Past Mario games had risky rewards for jumping like a powerup or red coins.
But its rarely used as much now.
