The problem of Pro 3 is that the sticks are too far away from buttons, they're too much inwards. I was thinking well is it because the controller design itself is too wide (I've never really played with ps4 or ps5 controllers personally, I've only owned PS1 long ago and a PS3), but I guess maybe it's not so much that, but simply that the sticks on Pro 3 are too much inwards to the center. At least looking at these images of Playstation controllers, I would think something between PS3/PS4 spec is the sweet spot. I don't have much exprience on this, but eyeing on the, the sticks even on the wide PS5 controller look to be closer to buttons than they are are on Pro 3 controller. So basically you run more to this risk if your symmetrical controller is too wide, and less so if it's "packed in small space" like on PS3 controller (which is why I say somewhere between ps3/ps4 is probably ideal, if there's risk that ps3 size form factor is too small for some people). Strangely enough assymetrical controller design seems to be harder to fuck up like this
