The Russians don't even use the ak47 anymore and haven't for decades. They even switched to a caliber that is a tad bit smaller than the what the m4 shoots i.e. the ak74. The m4 is more percise, the reliability issues are overblow (it isn't the Vietnam era anymore ya know), and you can modulate the gun for any situation very easily. For me though it is the mini-14, I don't know what it is about it but I like the aesthetics.

Which is turning out to be a terrible heavy rifle and the only reason it is being considered by the US Army is because SIG is giving "gifts" to the right people. If they are going back to standard issue battle rifles for your average soldier they should have just adopted a modernized M14, G3, FN FAL, or AR-10. At least those battle rifles are battle proven but overall the AR-10 would make the most sense because it is basically the M-16 platform which every US soldier is familiar with at this point chambered in 7.62x51 so you wouldn't need additional training to know how to operate it.
