The setting is bleak and is pretty mean to its cast. The premise is: "what if kids started being born with magic anime powers in the second half of the 21st century." The people with the anime powers (psychics) have unnatural hair and eyes and the typical personalities that come with being stock shonen characters (see pic related for the differences in design between a normie and a supernatural 12-year-olds). Many have supernatural athleticism and competency as well.
The normies don't like teenagers throwing down in central plaza as part of their friendship rituals, and the psychics are a great scapegoat for the shitty situation the world was in, so normies brutally oppress them (in some countries, they round up any kid with unnatural features for the death camps; btw, they also harvest their organs and body parts to create weapons and products).
Japan, where the main character lives, is dominated by a fascistic megacorporation that exploits psychics, and ultimately seeks to mindcontrol them to dominate the world. Opposed to them are another group of villains, the Multinational Union of Psychics, or Eden, who have radicalized from all the BS and become convinced the only way to stop the elimination of psychics is by killing off most of the non-psychics. This second group is composed mostly of orphans who've been fucked over by non-psychics, like the MC.
It's pretty edgy. MC-kun doesn't believe in mercy. For instance, he kills the oracle of Eden, who is 11–12 years old, in the second game during the final fight after telling her he's going to send her to hell with the rest of her adopted family. It's frustrating because the MC fucks up, especially when he tries to go back to being a normal kid after resolving the immediate situation, leaving chaos and a power vacuum behind. Note that him being edgy is not treated as a good thing. Most of his character arc is getting over his mental conditioning and becoming more understanding and responsible.
