my thinking after over analyzing every frame for hours is the movie is saying your soul is inherently tied to Earth and to "transcend the screen" is to realize this objective reality over the fantasy that science fiction is selling us. Yes I could be wrong. But I think that is the only interpretation when everything is considered unless you go way over the edge imo and suggest everything after the 'star gate' is a 'dream sequence' including the ending which renders the entire finale meaningless in my view. I dont think the typical surface level reading that he is returning to earth to evolve the rest of mankind is correct, I also dont think the novelization from Clarke is meant to have the same story and I dont think any of the sequels he wrote or the movie 2010 are continuations of what stanley kubric had in mind.
