specifically for this guy I used Vallejo Liquid Metal silver (the best metal paint), a wash of P3 armour wash (the best metal wash), and I tested a few very bringht silvers out on the sharpest edges and points of contact for light. Kinda makes you not want to bother with nmm at all.
that said I agree with your points on nmm actually being pretty straightforward (I actually very roughly did some on the rifle to test out some colour other than just Matt black). The key is establishing areas of contrast, generally the main flat colour of the metal and the areas that reflect (and what they reflect) and the areas that don't (the shadows). Actually pulling it off is a whole other game
