Yeah, it's a giant waste of time and effort, and you'll never get your mix the same twice for certain colors (especially ones involving magenta), and mixes will never be as good as single (or low count) pigments (not that most paints are single pigments, but the idea of just taking CYMK (and white) inks and making any color is retarded and misguided).

i'd like to get a set thats a good gradient of the color wheel but the smaller sets tend to be a random mismatch to where i'm not sure who could possibly use this palette, plus the savings isn't good at all

Not to shill, but The ProAcryl base set is pretty decent if you're okay to mix a *little* for shade and highlight colors. And I think Sugs signature set from them is specifically picked for paint mixing purposes - though my same criticisms apply regarding mixing never being as ideal as actual pigment colors.
I would just do any decent base set and then individual colors as needed.

The gun looks like those animation samples of physical objects dispersing into a gas or liquid. It honestly feels uncanny to look at.
So i am trying to make this project a reality and need the help of kitbashers. I am trying to get this to work with some bits I had floating around. I am making a slaanesh daemon prince(ss) and want to make the wings be mirrors attaching to her a la hellraiser chains or just rope bondage like from the inspiration photo. How would you make the two mirrors float without looking too stupid? Im thinking a heavy metal rod that hits under the ropes along her arms to hold it up, but unsure what kind of steel wire/ect id be looking for (like thickness). How do you usually make 'floating' models not look like they are rigged up on stilts? Sorry for the shotty image. It's late.

1.5mm steel rod should be enough, if you can hide a couple on each side you can get away with 1mm, in any case it will have some spring to it
if you can't hide a straight rod you can look into bending brass rods or steel welding wire, again about 1-1.5mm

This is such a weird fucking thing to do. And common, too. Why the fuck would you give an advice about something you know nothing about? Anonymously, too. Like why lmao.
It's true, you're right guys. NMM is impossible unless you have a masters in classical art and have done a minimum of 500 masterwork studies and are working as a professional artist.
Seriously, you are all hyping it up way too much in your brains. Yes it's not a beginner technique and it takes some practice and learning, but it's not impossible by any stretch of the imagination. Something like
>>96375693 or
>>96375684 (not my posts btw) might be, but that's like max tier NMM. You'd also never achieve the highest tier TMM style mini either, does that mean you're just never going to paint again or try to get better at it?

I had so much fun doing my one off GY center piece the other day I decided to an entire 3x3 board. Apologies for the bad lighting but my hobby desk is too small to show the entire board assembled together. Going to have a large outer wall ringing the entire GY. 3 breaches and 1 gate for the main areas to enter from. 2 mausoleums, 8 statues, and a multitude of Graves will litter the boards.
Going to take the rest of my vacation and then some to finish this board and my GF keeps mocking me for wasting it on this but I can see how some old duffer turns his entire basement into a train diorama now.

I like NMM but some of the choices are so weird and some just objectively wrong imo. Bounce light from the lantern on the metal is dimmer than the light it's casting on the cloak, ambient lighting is brighter on the leg than it is from the lantern. I genuinely don't know what the fuck the lighting on the lantern arm shoulder pad is supposed to be representing.

This was going to be my exact advice. Maybe rotate the scalpel blade a little bit to gouge out a bigger divot? The idea is to establish a guide hole that keeps the drill bit from drifting.

Use something round to make the hole so that the bit can't drift, like a needle or thumbtack. Never go straight on to make the hole, come from almost flat against the part you want to mark, get your point and then angle the tack up perpendicular to make the hole.

Adorable little guy. Full of character.
My objectively correct opinion on NMM:
1. It is a good advanced technique to learn. It forces you to understand how light works on metallic (or even just shiny) surfaces because if you don't - the end result looks off. This is a valuable skill to learn as a painter. It also requires smooth blends, which are, again, good to practice.
2. Done well it is an effective way to show off your painting skills. Perfect for competition pieces and display models.
3. Learning it is completely optional. It has its uses as mentioned above, but if you're not interested in trying the effect - there are other ways to improve the same skill areas (like focusing on volumetrics with cloth/skin).
Picrelated is the first NMM study I tried to paint. The gold was largely a failure because I made the highlights too large.

Thats your problem, use a pin to make the whole so its actually round. After that its just about starting small and working your way up. Start with a #74 and go to #64 for boltguns. Make sure to check your centering each step from different angles of lighting. Its really easy to end up thinking you are center because of the shadows but then you turn the model to the other side and its totally wrong. I normally do this by spinning the model upside down and to the sides to check, while holding the model on either side of my lamp. Takes about 5 min per barrel.

You can easily do it with your knife. You should be spinning the blade to drill a small starter hole in the barrel. That way if you fuck up the alignment you can recenter it by scraping your blade in the direction toward the center.

Im just giving my anecdotal experience. When I use hobby knife I fuck it up. When I use pin I dont. When making the center hole with a pin you can just kinda keep at it until you are happy, pushing the plastic around and "folding" it over from side to side until the center mark is actually center.
If you fuck up too bad just put sprue goo in it and try again in a week (thats how long it takes spruegoo to finish curing if not 2 weeks).

Only one more head, some standard basing and I am finally free from these intercessors! Itβs pretty evident how by the time I got to #7 you can definitely tell I figured out how I want to stylistically approach Space Marines. Thereβs just a hint of hand-applied distress with only additional slight texturing of Rhinox Hide on the edges. I like the vibrancy of the blue and light edge highlighting, so adding all that distress texturing muddies things up.

Some speed/contrast paints are just good at what they do. For instance, Skeleton Horde is an amazing paint for bone, I absolutely love Snakebite Leather and I actually prefer using Black Legion as a flat, black paint (it goes on super smooth with nary a brushstroke). Likewise, some of these are great to apply on top of normal paints if youβre looking to add a bit of texture.
Like others have said, these are simply additional tools.

Fast way to do surfaces with a lot of detail like fur. Good for staining when diluted with contrast medium. Overall washing over a monochrome drybrush. Plus a couple of edge cases like washing metallics with some particular dark contrast-likes.

If you're still here guy who wants to learn NMM, you don't need to be able to blend or anything, you just need 4 variations in tone and learn how to place them. Let's thank the person who posted their eldar dude because he's a prime example of it. Look at pic related. it's mostly a mid grey color, with an extreme jump to white for the main highlight that sells the effect, and then a very narrow band of dark grey and a small amount of black. The important part is that the black is directly next to a much lighter spot.

What a cute doggo
I saw that both AK and GSW sells "basic" airbrushes. Are they good? I'm afraid to ask outside of /tg/ since last time somebody else asked about airbrushes elsewhere, people started recommending absurdly expensive models, each costing way more than compressors themselves (and started talking about importing paints straight from Japan because somehow "local brands are shit"). I just want to use airbrush as supplementary tool, for priming, varnishing and "all over" base layers.

key points, double action, .3 needle or interchangeable, non removable cup on top, one piece body (avoid those aliexpress ones made of aluminium in bright colors, looks for the chromed ones)
the amazon compressor+airbrush kits (fengda or timeretch usually) that come with one like that are fine, the version that comes with a tank

I already have this one, from "mini compressor + airbrush" set, I simply ran into video suggesting both not paying too much for starting airbrush and AK "basic line" one. I simply noticed that after cleaning it, it apparently leaked a bit (there was paint in thread section of needle and booze caps) and all this talk about better trigger control made me consider changing it. But if you say that it hardly matter or that compressor with a tank will matter more, then I simply won't waste money.
From what I see, both online and local shops in my country mostly stock either your pic model and others from this company, FineArt stuff or those H&S expensive ones.

It might be but my own experience with brush application of varnish and primer was quite bad (brush marks, glossy "matte", pooling or desaturated colors in case of varnish, burying details in case of primers) and rattlecans can be used, in my case, only outside and require temperature above 10C with humidity below 70% - conditions present in my country for maybe 3-4 months. Already had situations where I had to "smuggle" tools and parts to apartment block basement because I had to prime/varnish something and it was either too cold or constantly raining outside.

suddenly getting jump scares by my dude getting reposted (here's another angle, although all my pictures kinda suck)
specifically for this guy I used Vallejo Liquid Metal silver (the best metal paint), a wash of P3 armour wash (the best metal wash), and I tested a few very bringht silvers out on the sharpest edges and points of contact for light. Kinda makes you not want to bother with nmm at all.
that said I agree with your points on nmm actually being pretty straightforward (I actually very roughly did some on the rifle to test out some colour other than just Matt black). The key is establishing areas of contrast, generally the main flat colour of the metal and the areas that reflect (and what they reflect) and the areas that don't (the shadows). Actually pulling it off is a whole other game

I mentioned how PVC often comes warped and that you need to reshape it using warm water or a hair dryer, like thin resin pieces. I haven't had a solid piece for you to visualize. I found the ones I was looking for. Here is what you can expect to see when you open up your box of brand new mantic terrain crate.
Buckley the retarded horse and the cart from hell he dragged in with him. I will reshape these and post some more pictures later so you can see the limitations there. This is why I say to stay away from PVC minis especially. You will never get those rifles or swords or spears straightened how you want them. They are flimsy enough that you will certainly break the paint layer bumping them or whatever. It's not worth it even when they are sold for a dramatically low price. You might as well buy army men from the dollar store and use those at that point.

Grandpa's rocking chair of course. Some things are wildly too small, others are comically massive. The retarded horse over in the other picture is massive even compared to stuff like empire outrider cavalry from gw. It's like the size of one of those Griffin knights mounts or whatever they're called. I can't recall the name right now.

Battleline units. Typically I assemble the miniatures, clean mold lines, glue sand to bases with two layers of PVA glue (second batch mixed with some water).then I magnetize the bases with magnetic tape, as I typically have flat MDF bases. If I'm feeling really industrious I'll clip off all the extra bits from the sprues and put them to my bits box so that I can throw the empty sprues away to save space.
After these pre-preparations I prime the batch of miniatures. Typically I paint two-three times a week in sessions that range from 30 to 90 minutes, typically an hour. My goal is to get at least one layer of paint to a group of models, a dozen or so for basic infantry, 5-6 cavalrymen, 3-6 monstrous infantry models and so on. I believe that consistently is better than inspiration, but I sometimes fail to live up to this ideal. I also have a hard time telling when a model is done and the final mistake-fixing part before varnishing makes me a bit nervous.

There are exceptions to every rule, anon. A can of Retributor Armour can mean the difference between "Dante and his Sanguinary Guard are finished" and months of aggravation.

Sometimes you'll try something and think it looks nice but never ever want to have to do it again. Batch painting is for the perfected scheme.

i mounted a few LEDs into a mates resin printed boxnaut to make the sarcophagus slit, rear engine stacks, and flamer all glow red, ran the whole thing off a little cr2032, the lights never got warm, but there were about 5 of them splitting the power.
it ended up looking like shit though, the amount of parts he fucked up masking for the primer, and his insistence that "the wash wont fill up the tiny slits where the light comes out, its fine" meant it was only noticeable in a very dark room.
on a more useful note, unless you're pumping a shitton of power through the thing 24/7 it'll be fine, modern LEDs are pretty efficient.
