Most people who know about Sonic haven't read the comics Most people can't read in general, it's actually very concerning so whenever they see a character like Surge, they don't ask about her traumatic past or backstory, they think "Punk girl creature is girl, she like Sonic?"

It's not that hard. You can even keep her backstory.

The main problem with Surge is that her characterization and motivation keeps flip-flopping, and that's primarily because of the two idiot writers fighting over her.
Don't make her emotional, don't make her want to have a heart of gold. I keep telling everyone, make her like Juri Han, with a dash of Eobard Thawne

But you could argue that after Surge found out the truth about herself, she blamed Sonic for her situation because she was hurt, let down by the supposed hero, even though Sonic was guilty by association at best for Surge's manipulation. Under the right writer, Sonic and Surge's relationship can be quite compelling.
