This issue is the same with most fighting games right now, in the past and will be in the future.
Street Fighter has a grip on the genre simply for being the first major series at the time, therefore it's the most well known fighting game of all time.
Why does every tag fighter that comes out have some old MVC head in the dev team and inevitably has stuff ripped right of the MVC series? Because it's the game people push as the best in the genre.
Why is ArcSys now doing a marvel game of all things, a franchise that hasn't been relevant in video games in years? Because they want to make a new NOT-MVC because we can't make new things in the genre.
I checked some info, and if you check the new IPs in the genre, the newest ones that aren't based on an already existing fighting game IP have been HxH, OG GBVS, DNF Duel and the first release of Under Night. Before that, the newest IP in the genre was Blazblue in 2008.
It's honestly a miracle that Vanilla Versus was able to survive, amidst a pandemic and delay based netcode. Same with Rising. The game is just well loved amongst those that play it, even if it's not the most popular game. It's easy to pick up and play with enough depth to warrant learning the game further. And I wouldn't consider Rising dead. It's just the same as every other fighter that isn't the big 3. Lacking in numbers, bursting with passion other than CotW, that game feels like the biggest monkeys paw for an SNK fan
