Growing up, I was friends with kids whose parents moved from the USSR in the 80s. They were chemical weapons scientists working on top-secret stuff, which meant they got access to the VIP stores reserved for the elites that had all the best stuff in the biggest quantities, and you didn't have to line up in the snow at 4 AM to try to get a loaf of bread when the store opens because it'd sell out in an hour. They flew to Italy first and then to the US.
They said that walking into a little Italian supermarket was like dying and going to heaven. They couldn't believe it was possible for a store to have so much good food that just anyone could go in and buy. Then they came to America and got to see American supermarkets, which are 10x the size and have 50x as many products. Basically the same as when Yeltsin got shown some random Texas supermarket and kept asking if it was some ultra-VIP store for billionaires, and then cried on the flight home because American janitors were eating better than Soviet generals.
Anyway the dad said thank God Communism was destroyed, and that if anyone seriously tries to bring it back here we should kill them. I wonder if they're still around now.
