Growing up, I was friends with kids whose parents moved from the USSR in the 80s. They were chemical weapons scientists working on top-secret stuff, which meant they got access to the VIP stores reserved for the elites that had all the best stuff in the biggest quantities, and you didn't have to line up in the snow at 4 AM to try to get a loaf of bread when the store opens because it'd sell out in an hour. They flew to Italy first and then to the US.

They said that walking into a little Italian supermarket was like dying and going to heaven. They couldn't believe it was possible for a store to have so much good food that just anyone could go in and buy. Then they came to America and got to see American supermarkets, which are 10x the size and have 50x as many products.
