Finally sat down and watched this thing after months of procrastinating/dreading it after my first attempt.
I'd say my opinion of it hasn't changed much, but I'm glad I watched it. The music was very good (refreshing to hear a film with a full-on OST current year), and the story/concept was good fun.
Apart from the animation (which really, really bothered me given the movie has no shortage of fantastic action/music setpieces that would've been god-tier had they been fully animated, as well as random scenes with smooth animation and others with powerpoint-tier shit), my biggest gripe was the tone/pacing. The movie is never sure whether it should be an over the top, almost Naked Gun/Megamind-esque parody of Asian pop culture or if it should be a more serious film that has the facade of an Asian pop culture parody with something darker underneath about the dehumanizing nature of fame in the vein of kid-friendly equivalent to The Wall or Perfect Blue.
Instead it just does everything, which results in weird pacing and jarring, inorganic tonal shifts.
And the humor, while having many moments and gags that are creative and laugh out loud, are let down by insufferable Westernized Asian Progressive writing that I had a hard time sitting through (though this was largely concentrated in the first half of the film); not to mention some weird cinematography choices.
I'd probably give it a 6.5/10 overall, nothing amazing but it stands out in the mountain of shit that's come out this year I guess. I just found it a tad disappointing overall given it's the de facto normalfag zoomie movie of the summer.
