I've learned just how much criticism of California online is just misleading or straight up wrong stuff from jealous people in other states. I remember seeing a lot on 4chan about how Californians were fat (and they"d mention something about HAES) when actually they're one of the top five most fit states and the conservative southern states are actually the fattest.

Looking in from the outside, the seething from other states about how California mogs in pretty much everything is hilariously obvious.
