>For all the astronomical sales of FF7, why does it feel massively less popular overall than Mario 64 and OoT?
Because it was, especially in the west.
>32mil N64's vs 100mil PS1's means the per capita sales of the Mario and Zelda are much higher.
>Final Fantasy VII's primary market is Japanese, the N64's primary market is American.
What this means is that if you time traveled back to 90's America and broke into random homes you'd find the average American N64 owner would be far more likely to have Mario than the average American PS1 owner would FFVII.
Not shitting on FFVII, it was very popular at the time, especially for a JRPG in the United States, it just wasn't Mario 64 popular.
>It's bizarre to find that the n64 sold so little but is much more remembered fondly in a meme sense.
That's because the N64 was hugely popular in the United States. It sold 20mil units in North America which is roughly the same amount as the SNES, it is not surprising Americans remember it so well. If you didn't have one you knew someone who did and since it was famous for it's 4P multiplayer, even people who didn't own it have fond memories.
