Did you know the Spanish only defeated the Inca because they were helped by their rivals?
The Chancas people of Vilcashuamán for example were conquered by the Inca Empire before the Europeans arrived. Their defeat was so decisive that the Inca ruler Pachacútec even chose the Chanca regional capital of Vilcashuamán to construct a major administrative center, symbolizing Inca dominance.
Unfortunately the Chancas people bitter resentment and long-standing rivalry with the Incas made them join forces with the Spanish as a way to take revenge and regain their independence. Historical estimates suggest tens of thousands of Chanca warriors together with other indigenous allies fought alongside the Spanish conquistadors against the Incas. Sources indicate that during the decisive siege of Cusco in 1535, Francisco Pizarro commanded a force that included 30,000 native allies, with the Chanca, Huancas, and Cañari being the principal groups.
