There were arguments about what qualified as "gentle" or not, but where it tended to get really bad was arguments about gender roles. gfd and rr was generally viewed as an inversion of typically expected gender roles to some extent or another, which often led to debate on the societal interaction of the male and female sex. These debates didn't always go very smoothly, and the fact that a lot of the gfd posters came from r9k didn't help the situation.
There's also a lot of bitterness about the perceived "ratio", that male subs outnumber female dommes something like ten to one, and that most women wouldn't be into this at all (see >>11352280). Personally, the data I've seen leads me to believe the ratio isn't actually that fucked, and the number of women who are open to this sort of thing if you express interest in it is even higher than that.
