you could call it ear candy but I think what it's really comparable to is the concept of setting a toned ground in drawing. basically, before you start drawing, you just rub a graphite stick all over the paper you're gonna be drawing on, and then smudge it into an even, silvery tone using some paper towels or similar, and that kinda makes it so that you start with some basic shading already in place that helps unifying everything else. even if you have to erase some lines, you can simply smudge the tones ground and cover it up, it's very forgiving in that way. and in that same way using these kinds of noises in the background can by itself help glue together a track.
