It may fall on deaf ears but an M9 or any other quality DA/SA pistol is the safest type of handgun to carry. If you remember to decock (which you should) when reholstering, you are 100% good. The manual safety is overkill in most instances and a lot of Beretta shooters do a G conversion to make the decocking lever only for decocking.
Like most people starting out, you'll have trouble learning how to accurately shoot the first double action shot, google Ernest Langdon's DA/SA videos. It helps a ton.
