and before it was the kievan rus, then the golden horde, then the crimean khanate. and before all that it was greek. so if anything, the greeks have an earlier claim to crimea than the russians and ukrainians.
but the ukrainians still have an earlier claim than the russians because the kievan rus came first. in that sense it is ancient ukrainian land.
russia only has a claim if they both ignore prior claims and the fact they gave the territory away later. this is just conquest, no matter how they try to justify it.
