It's a statement about the artist's perception of heroes, how they affect us as the average person, and also about the assignment affecting the students. It isn't any more or less deep, but it does actually try to say something and the students and teachers will see that which is more of a statement than a portrait of a fireman. It's also about Max choosing to be a hero with her powers, or choosing love over heroics, but only we know that if we choose to reflect at the end. It isn't just random pretentious drivel, it ties into the entire game.
