the cope I've made peace with (on the bigmeme 1 since they still haven't shipped my day 0 2e reeeeeEEE) is that even though the 40% brightness is way less bright than regular indoor lighting, once you're in the headset for a while with the 100% blocking gasket, your eyes adjust to the dynamic range and it looks fine.

The mic is good though, no cope required.
